Representation of Gender - Primeval

Camerawork has been used in different ways throughout this clip for the representation of gender. Multiple times a hand held camera has been featured in this clip e.g. when the characters are working together to try and produce some sort of a trap for the monster that is plaguing their area. As the tiger approaches and creates a struggle for the team the audience can see the unsteadiness of the positioning of the camera which heightens the effect of urgency. The shaky camera provides an action sequence for the viewers and gives a troubled atmosphere that results in the audience's tense feelings towards the scene and makes them sympathise with the characters hard paid jobs. An over the shoulder shot has also been used later on in the clip to show a conversation between two characters. For example, this has been used when the sophisticated woman is discussing the matter of going to the press about the issue of a sabre toothed tiger being in the woods. This has been used to show the power in this particular situation which has been presented to the audience through the high angle of the clip as it's placed over the woman's shoulder. This shows that the woman has more power over the man due to the knowledge of him being involved in illegal stuff, this presents a countertype of women's stereotypical values and goes against women being displayed as vulnerable. Close up shots have also been featured at this particular part of the clip to express the characters emotions through their facial expressions. This has been used when the man aims a shotgun towards the woman and the camera shows her shock and horror of being in this position. By using this the director is presenting the power and control being switched from the woman to the man showing the traditional stereotype of the woman being a 'damsel in distress'.

Editing has been used effectively to show the representation of gender. Fast paced editing has been used to present action to the audience. This has been used when the characters start going against the sabre toothed tiger at the start of the clip. By using this it is creating an effect of urgency and heightens the tense atmosphere which makes viewers continue to watch the series due to wondering what may occur in the future. The fast past of the clips also presents that time is happening quickly and shows the speed of the action, this represents the characters ability of thinking fast to try and diffuse the situation. This makes the audience understand the characters more. Shot reverse shot has also been used throughout this clip during the action sequences. Normally this type of editing would be used to show two characters in a conversation however in this clip it is used to present different things happening in different perspectives. For example, when the characters are fighting against the tiger the camera moves to the girls point of view when she tries to help her co-worker and then changes again when the man is trying to help the girl. This has been done to show the different representations of gender by portraying the girl as being strong and capable but not fully in control of the situation due to her lack of strength when compared with the man. Slow motion has also been used later on in the clip when the woman on the farm witness the gun the man is holding and she is soon thrown to the ground. The slow motion has been used to show shock and disorientation to being pushed to the floor, it also shows the stress of this moment to the audience as the woman is unable to get herself out of this despite her amount of power she had at the start of the scene.

Sound has been used effectively to show the representation of gender. Non-diegetic sound has been used through the use of music during the action sequences at the start of the clip. Having music in the background builds suspense for the audience due to the beat and pace, if the music is fast and deep it normally means something bad is about to happen in this case it was the appearance of the tiger. The music presents a hint of what is to come and also makes a tense atmosphere for the viewers. Diegetic sound has also been used throughout this clip through the use of dialogue. This has been used to make it helpful for the audience to understand what is happening between the characters and how they are feeling at the particular time. For example, after the appearance of the tiger the girl shouts in order to engage the animals attention. Due to the tone, volume and pitch of her voice the audience can see that this an urgent situation and can understand the stress and horror the characters are in. This makes the viewers understand the storyline more and can follow what is happening. Synchronous sound has also been used with the sound effects that happen when the man is climbing the tree in order to get away from the tiger. The noises are something that is too be expected in this situation making it easier for the viewers to follow what is currently occurring and makes it more realistic and believable due to the drastic storyline.

The different clothing on the characters portray different things to the audience. For example, the woman with the short white hair and black fitting clothing shows a countertype of women's stereotypes. The way she is presented suggests to the viewers that she doesn't care about her appearance like other girls who feel the need to look a certain way that the media says they should look. She also shows capability of taking care of herself and others and isn't dependent on other people, this is shown when she saves her co worker numerous times from the tiger. This shows she goes against the traditional stereotype of women being weak and vulnerable. However the other female in this clip who wears smart and sophisticated clothing portrays herself as being high class and status when compared to the other characters, this shows she thinks of herself as being more important than other people. This character is presented as following the traditional stereotype due to being saved and seen to be the 'damsel in distress' when she is lying on the ground after being faced at gun point. Her clothing of a low cut tight dress also shows she cares about her appearance and flaunts her body to the opposite gender. The setting of the clip is majority based in the woods which gives a horror effect to the series. This is due to the woods being presented as being dark and gloomy and is isolated from other people so there are is no way of getting help if needed.
